Davis Schneider is back with the Blue Jays as the club reshapes its roster following Josh Smith's move to the injured list.
Schneider's promotion gives Toronto another right-handed bat capable of moving around the field and changing how the lineup card looks from one day to the next.
The Blue Jays also activated Spencer Arrighetti, adding another available arm while making two corresponding moves to clear roster space.
The biggest loss is Smith. Toronto placed Josh Smith on the injured list with left hamstring inflammation, taking him out of the mix while the club waits for the issue to settle.
That opens an immediate opportunity for Schneider. His return gives the Blue Jays another option at the plate and creates room for his role to grow depending on how Toronto handles Smith's absence.
Arrighetti's activation matters on the pitching side. He is available again as the Blue Jays adjust their staff and decide how to distribute innings across the rotation and bullpen.
Davis Schneider gets another opening with Toronto
Brendan Cellucci was optioned to Triple-A as part of the shuffle. That move clears a spot while keeping Cellucci available as organizational depth if Toronto needs another arm later.
For Schneider, the call-up puts him back in a major-league clubhouse with a fresh chance to earn consistent at-bats. The next question is where those opportunities come from and how often his name lands on the lineup card.
Smith's absence could make that decision easier. Any injury that removes a regular option forces a club to redistribute plate appearances, defensive assignments and bench usage.
That doesn't guarantee Schneider a fixed spot. It does give him an opening, and his production during this stint will help determine whether the promotion becomes more than a short-term response to the IL move.
Arrighetti faces a similar test on the mound. Being activated gets him back onto the active roster, but workload and role will determine how much impact he can make immediately.
Cellucci, meanwhile, heads back to Triple-A rather than disappearing from the picture. Pitching depth changes quickly across a season, and an option today can turn into another call-up when the staff needs coverage.
Toronto's roster now looks different on both sides of the ball: Schneider is up, Arrighetti is active, Smith is sidelined and Cellucci is back in Triple-A.
The move gives Schneider the clearest immediate opportunity. With Smith unavailable, the Blue Jays have created another lane for him to turn a call-up into a bigger role.
