Over the past several weeks, the Maple Leafs management has expressed to all Leafs nation that change will be coming to the roster construction which could mean an unraveling of their core 4 which you likely will be Mitch Marner.
A recent trade proposal surface on the web with NHL analyst Brian La Rose of Pro Hockey Rumors discussing what he thinks of this idea. The proposed trade would see Rangers superstar Artemi Panarin being moved to the Maple Leafs in exchange for Mitch Marner straight up.
On paper, both teams would get superstars and their money would be very close. Marner, is currently in a window to sign a long-term deal as he has one year remaining on his contract worth $10.9 million AAV. Many pundits in the NHL feel that Marner will ask for more money than William Nylander which would crack him over the $12 million mark.
As for Panarin, the Maple Leafs would be adding a quality talent and superstar as well who scored 120 points in 82 games last year. Unfortunately, when it mattered the most Panarin played like Marner and retreated in the playoffs especially in the Eastern Conference final.
It's doubtful this move would ever be made as the Maple Leafs would like to bolster other parts of their lineup with a trade with Marner. They have goaltending issues, bottom 6 and some defensive pairings that need adjustments.
It's also unlikely that the Rangers would like to part ways with Panarin as he has been their main cog of offence for the past couple of seasons.
With so much information on the web and stories across the board on what will happen to Marner, leafs nation might as well wait and see what will happen at the draft or even a possibility of being traded with a long-term deal already secure.
