Former Rangers center ready to on massive new role with the San Jose Sharks
Alex Wennberg only spent one season in New York, and would during free-agency head to the West Coast, for GM Mike Grier to sign him to a $10 Million dollar contract.
The Rangers dealt a 2024 2nd-round pick and a conditional 2025 pick for the forward this season.
With this latest move, Wennberg finds himself on a rebuilding team, as a mentor to the Sharks prospects in San Jose. He is ready to embrace his role in San Jose:
"I look forward to it. I feel like [it goes] two ways as well," Wennberg said. "I feel like, as an older player right now, I'm still 29, but for me to see those young guys coming in, to have such a skill and their talent, I feel like you can teach them a few things. I feel like it could be the same the other way around."
His time in New York saw him score 5 points(1 G, 4 A) in 19 games, averaging 15:22 TOI.
Usually, the 29-year-old is one of the younger players on all the teams he's been on. This time ironically, Wennberg's experience of being mentored before will help him establish himself, as an authority figure in San Jose.
"There were so many good guys. Cam Atkinson, Matt Calvert, Nick Foligno was a really good captain as well. Boone Jenner took me in and helped me out as well," Wennberg said. "I'm going into year 11. Through the years, there's been so much advice and so many guys who have had influence. If there's just someone you can help out a little bit or give some piece of advice to help them improve, I feel like that's something you're looking forward to. You try to pay it forward a little bit for what other guys did to me."
