The hockey community mourns the tragic passing of a hockey legend who spent nearly 50 years in the NHL as he sadly passes at 78-years old.
Lange started off by being the voice of the San Diego Gulls of the Western Hockey League, then finally reached his dream by joining the Penguins in the 1974 season.
Mike ended up leaving after one season due to bankruptcy, where he then served as the voice of the Washington Diplomats, a soccer team, but shortly returned for the 1976-77 season and never left again.
Unfortunately health issues finalized his career with the Penguins back in 2021 as it forced him to leave the broadcasting booth.
The Pittsburgh Penguins organization issued a heartfelt statement following the passing of Mike Lange, honouring his legacy with the Penguins:
Mike Lange was a wordsmith - a magician behind the mic.
The Californian quickly became a quintessential Pittsburgher, and his colorful calls and smooth cadence brought Penguins hockey to life.
The Hall-of-Famer's voice is synonymous with the biggest calls in franchise history, including all five Stanley Cup Championships, and his unique one-liners and knack for anticipating game-changing plays set him apart from other announcers.
Only Mike could make the biggest names in hockey seem even more magical with just his voice.
Mike was so much more than a legendary broadcaster.
He was respected by the players and coaches and beloved by the fans. Because of him, Hockey Nights in Pittsburgh had the entire city "smilin' like a butcher's dog".
Truly heartbreaking news and on behalf of everyone here at NY Rangers Insider we send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mike Lange as they navigate through this difficult time.
