According to Seravalli, 11 NHL teams in total will have spent the projected $4.3 million increase in the salary cap even before the new season begins. Some teams like the Edmonton Oilers had spent in abundance as they acquired Connor brown and Corey Perry over the course of the year.
While Perry has been a solid player for the Oilers, brown has been a bitter disappointment. The team leads the NHS in overages as they have a staggering $3.45 million.
The Rangers came close in terms of bonuses as Rangers forward Will Cuylle only needed to play one more game for an $82,500 bonus. He did not which means the Rangers do not have to pay that out or put it towards their cap next year.
It's widely expected that several teams across the league will be making trades to help move salary around as the cap continues to get tighter around many. With the new trend of teams bankrolling other trades even though the cap is about to go up, certainly more deals will be on the horizon as teams are looking to get out from under some of these contracts.
Going into next season thus far, the Rangers have 18 players signed with projected cap space of $10.53 million. Unless trades are made during the offseason, the Rangers will need to work on 3 forwards, and four defensemen.
