3 intriguing destinations emerge for veteran NHL forward who still remains a free agent
NHL free agent Blake Wheeler has been without a contract since the start of July and will have to settle for a PTO from a team that invites him to training camp.
Wheeler has a lot of veteran experience to offer another team and could be a sneaky addition during training camp.
He'll want to sign with a contending team, undoubtedly.
Boston Bruins
The Bruins could be the ones to secure Wheeler for a 2nd stint and have been rumored to want to add the veteran for camp. He can be moved up and down the lineup and has leadership qualities any team could find useful. The Bruins only have $8.6 Million AAV ready to use, and Swayman is speculated to want more money per season. Once the Bruins have that contract squared away they will look for additions to training camp.
Return To New York
While the door hasn't shut for a return to New York, it might be a longshot for a reunion. He scored 21 points in 54 games on Broadway and dealt with injuries that shortened his season. The team has a full 23-player roster, and is under the minimum salary cap space, so another injury would need to occur for the Rangers to bring him back.
Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche only have one roster spot open, and $2 Million in cap space available. They will have to address off-ice business prior to training camp and Wheeler could be a solid addition by GM Chris McFarland. He could be a great addition to the 2nd power-play unit and 3rd line for the Avalanche. He's also versatile enough to play in the top six should injuries occur. The team is well aware of his capabilities, character, and intangibles on the ice if he signed with these Stanley Cup contenders.
