Former Rangers general manager Neil Smith along with NHL wrap around podcaster Vic Morren have questioned the recent moves by general manager Chris Drury regarding Barclay Goodrow and the handling of Rangers captain Jacob Trouba.

Smith thinks that removing Goodrow from the dressing room especially in the way that it was handled could pose a major problem for the Rangers especially amongst the players. Smith feels that he was an integral part of the leadership group and a key player in the room who could be a large hole to fill.
"The Rangers have problems of their own making," asserted Smith. "Losing Barclay Goodrow is one of them. He was an alternate captain and appreciated by his teammates as a player with spirit. This could turn out to be a problem with the player base."
He also pointed out that the mishandling of the Jacob Trouba situation will also be an issue for the team as their current captain may feel besieged and unwanted as the Rangers were actively trying to trade him earlier this offseason.
Many rumors were flying around the web that the Rangers had a deal in place with the Detroit Red Wings to send their defensemen there which turned out not to be true, it's been mentioned that Trouba has been less than pleased that this has occurred.
Both men also mentioned other issues such as the goaltending where it's believed that Igor Shesterkin will be looking for north of $10 million per season Which would put him in the elite category alongside Andrei Vasilevskiy and Sergei Bobrovsky.
"Shesterkin is going to want to be the highest-paid goalie in the league," said Smith. "In the class with (Tampa Bay's) Andrei Vasilevskiy. It's going to be interesting to see if Igor will be okay with extended negotiations."

Both Morren and Smith feel the team does not have enough substance among their players to go further as they have pointed out the team lacks the interest in going to the net. It remains to be seen on how the Rangers performed this year.
