Former New York Rangers divisional rival unexpectedly announces his retirement
A 400-game NHL veteran and former Washington Capitals defenseman has decided to hang up his skates at the age of 36.
Left-shoft defenseman Matt Irwinplayed 461 games during his entire NHL career splitting it between the San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, Nashville Predators, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, and Vancouver Canucks announced his retirement through the NHLPA.
"As I reflect on my career, I can't help but feel incredibly grateful and fortunate to have lived out my childhood dream of playing in the NHL. My success would not have been possible without the support of my family, my in-laws and especially my wife, Chantel, and two kids Beckem and Lennon. You all pushed me to be the best version of myself on and off the ice."
Irwin's arrival in the NHL didn't happen through the draft, instead, he played his way up through the ranks of the AHL. He started his journal with the Worcester Sharks. He'd play two seasons in the AHL, and tally 73 points before the San Jose Sharks would offer him an NHL contract.
He'd capitalize on the opportunity left on the table, due to Brent Burns and Jason Demers's unfortunate injuries at the time.
He'd find opportunities across the league, in 2015 playing with the Boston Bruins when their blueline was busted up. While finding his way across the NHL playing with teams like the Anaheim Ducks, Nashville Predators, and Buffalo Sabres, and finishing out his NHL career with the Washington Capitals.
"There are so many people I would like to thank and it's really hard to express my gratitude the way that you all deserve, but please know that everyone that I crossed paths with during my career means the world to me and my family, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart."
We want to wish Matt Irwin a happy retirement! We hope he finds success in his future endeavors, in wherever his career takes him next.
