PWHL's huge announcement regarding the next expansion: Another team coming to New York?
The PWHL has proven itself to be a successful league in its first year of operation. The league began with six teams and was broadcast over YouTube for free last season.
A huge change compared to the dinosaur views that the NHL operates on(making it easier to view games, what a notion!).
The six inaugural teams in New York, Boston, Ottawa, Toronto, and Boston didn't have original logos or names last season. But they were revealed prior to the start of the PWHL season.
The Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Montréal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge and Toronto Sceptres are the first official monikers for the PWHL, which made its debut in January 2024.
The league is expecting continued success into the 2024-2025 season and interest in women's hockey is growing.
They're exploring expansion during the 2025-2026 season.
The league in 2025-2026 will expand into an 8-team, as the PWHL has announced. Despite reports of expansion, there's no confirmation of what cities will be included in this phase of the PWHL business plan.
Due to the location of the 6 teams in the PWHL, it could be assumed they'd like to keep travel efficient and simple. Could they consider moving the next franchises into Detroit? Maybe Pittsburgh or Philadelphia?
Expansion is a good sign for women's sports, as it means the league is viable, and the sport is gaining a good audience.
«We said, You know what? We're all in, so let's do Year 4 expenses in Year 1,'» Kasten explained. «That resulted in a lot more revenue, and that's why we think our decision to invest in the league was the right one. We're on the right track - the investments we made are paying off.»
The league has invested in itself, and it's paid off twofold, as they have banked on the PWHL.
With stars such as Sarah Nurse, Erin Ambrose, Brianne Jenner, Marie-Philip Poulin and Hilary Knight, the only way the league can go is up!
Do you think the league will expand to ten teams in the next four years?
