This season for the Colorado Avalanche has been one of their worst starts in their history and it seems to have fallen on former Rangers goaltender Alexandar Georgiev's shoulders.
Two years ago, the Rangers decided to trade
Georgiev to the Colorado Avalanche as they felt that Shesterkin will be the goalie of the Rangers future. Although he's had five less wins in the two years, he's been the number one goaltender, Shesterkin has had a better goal against average at 2.53 compared to 2.77 and a save percentage of .915 compared to .908.
The big take away from this trade has been the collapse of Georgiev's play with Colorado as he has declined immensely and has taken his team along with him. The team began the season 0-4 Which has been their worst since 1998-99. It was clear that the Colorado Avalanche were not getting the saves they needed to win the games as Georgiev's goals against stood at 5.79 and his save percentage was .802.
These numbers are simply unacceptable for any team especially a team as powerful as the Avalanche which is three years removed from winning the Stanley Cup.
This poor play also ran through last year's season especially in the second half as questions began to emerge near the deadline of whether the Colorado Avalanche would make a trade for a goaltender to help shore up that position.
Even though his play has been poor, his head coach Jared Bednar has defended him and has pointed the fingers on other parts of his team including his defence core.
«Probably not a great start, right?» coach Jared Bednar said after the loss to the Islanders. «But I thought that was our worst defensive game of the three (losses to start the season) by a mile, not even close. He made a lot of good saves. He did.
