Is Chris Kreider's time In New York over? NHL insider provides bold prediction regarding his future
There's been speculation with the New York Rangers moving Jacob Trouba and Kaapo Kakko, that Chris Kreider could be next. An NHL Insider has shot down those rumors.
Chris Kreider was named a play on the trade block by GM Chris Drury weeks ago. With the team exiting their window of contention, it appears that they will be re-tooling on the fly.
Those movies included clearing $10.4 Million in cap space from Kaapo Kakko, and Jacob Trouba, and many thought Kreider was next.
But according to The Athletic's Arthur Staple, that couldn't be further from the truth for the Rangers.
Kreider may end up being a Ranger for life.
"Unless Drury is adamant about moving on from the closest thing the Rangers have to a lifer - which would mean essentially dumping Kreider for little return, since there's probably not a robust market for a 33-year-old who's got two years at $6.5 million left - then I think Kreider stays."
But the decision to stay with Kreider isn't 100% as if his play continues to deteriorate they could explore moving him soon.
"If things continue to deteriorate this season Kreider's spot may change, but for now, he definitely wants to be here forever"
Chris Kreider was known for his explosive play in the last three seasons scoring 127 goals. But his play has declined in 2024-2025, which was to be expected as he has 12 points( 11 G, 1 A) in 29 games.
His lack of production has been a problem, and a culture issue with the Rangers this season.
We could accuse the entire team of underperforming, and wouldn't be inaccurate, as one of the best lines this season featured Kaapo Kakko, Filip Chytil, and Will Cuyllee.
Kreider has been a part of the Rangers institution since the 2011-2012, season and was drafted 19th overall in the 1st round of the 2009 NHL Draft.
He has played his entire career in New York and has scored 564 points( 315 G, 249 A) with a +123 in 844 games played.
If Kreider were to be moved, the Rangers would have to involve another team to retain his salary in order to make it palatable for the next organization that trades for him.
His AAV is currently $6.5 Million, and he's in year 5 of his 7-year contract.
