Is this superstar worth the trouble for New York Rangers GM Chris Drury?
The Rangers organization maybe pondering a potential trade for Columbus Blue Jackets maligned winger Patrik Laine.
Laine has been cleared by the NHLPA players assistant program and will likely demand a trade from Columbus as he is looking for a fresh start. This was made clear by newly appointed general manager Don Waddell when he spoke to TSN 1050.
«Patrik's made it clear that, even before all the changes this summer, he would like a fresh start someplace,» Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell told First Up on TSN 1050. «We will look at it when the time comes which hopefully is very soon all the options. Now, I can't rule out any options, even returning here because it takes two teams to make a trade and if there's not a trade that makes any sense to us, then we have to just deal with what reality is.»
The 26-year-old winger has two years left on his deal which holds a cap hit of $8.7 million per season. Being the Rangers or any other organization within the league, the Blue Jackets will need to retain some salary to craft the deal.
Being this late into the offseason and with most teams having spent their capital this will only give Waddell a small group of teams to look at this player.
The idea of picking up a player who was drafted as high as Laine and could find his game again could be worth looking at as he could give the Rangers a huge boost in offence and on the power play. But as many know he has had troubles with injuries and even working with coaches which could make his stock value dropped dramatically.
It's certainly worth a phone call or two by general manager Chris Drury to see what it would take to bring Laine to New York City.
