But it's become clear that general manager Chris Drury and his team have decided to remain quiet throughout this offseason as the deals have not come together and one trade was blocked by their captain.
There are several reasons for this including a cap crunch that needed to be resolved with the release of Barclay Goodrow and his $3.6 million per season. This was done through waivers, and he ended up on the San Jose Sharks.
Drury tried to trade the captain to Detroit and that failed because Jacob Trouba blocked the deal using his no trade clause. And thirdly he has been trying to move Kappo Kakko with his freshly signed deal of $2.4 million which teams are not interested in taking.
Saying all this, it may be the best decision possible is to stand pat make minor moves if possible while waiting till next offseason to make even bigger moves as the Rangers a projected $29.8 million in cap space not including a cap bump which is expected. They will have 10 players signed to contracts out of 23 which means the team could look very different next summer.
Another way to look at it is Rangers won 55 games in the regular season which was a record and went to the conference finals. Even though the roster has its flaws, this team still went quite far, and management may have decided to stand pat for the most part.
But in the end, I feel the cap crunch was the biggest issue that has blocked the Rangers from making major changes and fans will need to wait and see on how this will play out as training camp will begin in less than two months.
