The Rangers could be in trouble of their own making. However, the results of the mess have yet to be seen on ice, or in the salary cap right now.

If you read up on the history of the 1994 New York Rangers and listen to the GM at the time Neil Smith, and his podcasting partner Vic Morren. They run the "NHL Wrapround" cast.
You should listen to what they have to say, as they're knowledgeable and know their stuff.
"The Rangers have problems of their own making," asserted Smith. "Losing Barclay Goodrow is one of them. He was an alternate captain and appreciated by his teammates as a player with spirit. This could turn out to be a problem with the player base."
Morren would also quip on their inability to play hard against the Florida Panthers;

"They don't go hard to the net."

He also feels that the Jacob Trouba situation could devolve into a mess, should the "Captain" get demoted.
But Igor Shesterkin and his agent could end up being a powder keg for GM Chris Drury and the Rangers. It looks as if the battle could just be started in the media.
"Shesterkin is going to want to be the highest-paid goalie in the league," said Smith. "In the class with (Tampa Bay's) Andrei Vasilevskiy. It's going to be interesting to see if Igor will be okay with extended negotiations."

While Vasilevskyi has two-Stanley Cups, Shesterkin could argue that the team in front of him wasn't good enough to win a Cup.
"But Igor could come back and say that he didn't have the team in front of him to win it," added Morren.

Both hosts Morren and Smith feel that the regular season team is ok, but in the post-season they don't have the talent to finish strong.
"They spend too much time in their own zone," claimed Morren. "And they don't play a North-South game."

Smith: "I don't see them playing 'meat grinder hockey. They're not capable of that. The top teams like Florida can but I don't think that the Rangers can do it!"

Smith made an interesting note, when he stated that Peter Laviolette's coaching style is always in top form during his first season with a new club. Afterwards, there is a significant drop-off though.
This could mean the Rangers are in a cup-or-bust situation come 2024-2025.
"The Rangers are stuck in 'PARK'" Smith concluded. "I don't see any improvement at all!"
