As the dust finally settles on the NHL trade deadline, GM Chris Drury delivered a masterclass in management. Although he held back from a blockbuster move, Carson Soucy's acquisition from the Vancouver Canucks is already paying dividend.

Scoring a big goal in his debut against the Senators, defenceman Carson Soucy appears to be comfortable on his new team.
Although Soucy has come to the Ranger' with a brand-new outlook, analysts around the league are beginning to question why Canucks GM Patrik Allvin was so quick to let him go.

Why did the Vancouver Canucks let him go?

While Soucy is widely recognized for his stay-at-home presence and big shot from the point, the Nucks' may have made an error by letting him go.
Though the Rangers may have found a hidden gem, his 5-on5 play has been a concern.
Among the 178 NHL defencemen who have played at least 600 minutes at 5-on-5 this season, Soucy ranks 171st in corsi percentage and high-danger chance percentage, according to Natural Stat Trick.
That means the Canucks have been significantly out-shot and out-chanced with Soucy on the ice at 5-on-5.
Just looking at the Canucks defencemen, Soucy has been on the ice for the highest rate of shot attempts against, shots on goal against, and scoring chances against at 5-on-5. Even worse, the penalty kill, which was once a strength of his game, has become a major weakness. He's been on the ice for the highest rate of unblocked shot attempts and goals against among Canucks defencemen on the penalty kill by a wide margin.

Although his 5-on-5 play might need some fine-tuning, his performance against the Senators gives an optimistic outlook on what's to come.
