The New York Rangers just waived forward Barclay Goodrow, and the San Jose Sharks picked him up, meaning that they got rid of $3.6 million.
That was desperately needed for New York, as they need to make some changes with the roster and don't have a lot of cap space.
Well, they may run into another problem with this veteran defenseman.
Erik Gustafsson, 32 years old, is due for a new contract. His one-year, $825,000 contract is up, and he's due for a raise after a decent season. Gustafsson had 31 points in 76 games this year with a +3, making him a solid fit on the blue line.
According to reporter Lyle Richardson of Bleacher Report, Gustafsson is seeking a one or two year deal worth $2.5 million.
It's fair, but he may have priced himself out of New York, as they don't have a lot of cap space.
Sure, they just got $3.6 million taken off their hands, but could they fall back into the «love the player, hate the contract» situation if they do give Gustafsson that money?
