According to DailyFaceOff's Frank Seravalli, Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs hired former enforcer and St. Louis Blues head coach Craig Berube as the new bench boss.
According to the team, a press conference will be held on Tuesday to make the announcement official.
Berube had been speculated as the Maple Leafs choice since the team had parted ways with Sheldon Keefe. NHL Insider Elliote Friedman first reported that Berube and the Maple Leafs had been discussing the position recently.
The 55-year-old, won his first Stanley Cup as head coach of the St. Louis Blues in 2018-2019 against the Boston Bruins. He was originally interim coach, taking over for Mike Yeo.
It could be considered a comeback for the enforcer, who originally played for the Maple Leafs during the 1991-1992 season before being included in the massive 10-player trade that sent Doug Gilmour to the Maple Leafs.
Berube spent 17 years in the NHL, primarily as an enforcer, putting up 159 points, an astounding 3, 149 PIMS across 1,054 NHL games.
When it comes to coaching, Berube spent 6 seasons with the Blues, earning a 206-132-44 record, and a .597 winning percentage.
Berube originally coached the Philadelphia Flyer during the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons, with a 78-58-28 record and a .553 winning percentage.
It was reported that the Maple Leafs also interviewed former Los Angeles Kings bench boss Tod McLellan, and former New York Rangers coach Gerard Gallant as well.
Rumors from Elliote Friedman linked Rod Brind'amour to the Maple Leafs as well, but it seems they weren't eager to wait for the end of the Hurricanes series to make a decision.
