The hockey community mourns the tragic passing of former Washington Capitals first-round draft pick Miika Elomo who sadly passed at 47-years old.
Miika Elomo was originally drafted by the New York Rangers divisional rivals, the Washington Capitals 23rd overall in the 1995 draft.
Unfortunately Elomo never turned into much of an NHL player, getting into just two career games during the 1999-2000 season, recording a single assist in the league.
He did spend several years in North America playing in the American Hockey League where he managed to record 30 goals and 45 assists for a total of 75 points in 216 games.
After just four years in North America, he returned to Finland where he spent the rest of his professional career with the Blues of the SM-Liiga, the top-tier professional league in Finland.
After recording zero points in 15 games with the Blues in the 2004-05 season, Elomo ultimately decided to hang up the skates, but he was not done with the hockey community just yet.
The Finnish veteran got back into the game during the 2012-13 season when he got a coaching role with a Finish junior club, and would spend 12 years coaching several leagues.
We regret to inform you of the passing of Miika Elomo 4, former NHL first-round draft pick and current head coach of Cergy-Pontoise I in the top-flight French league.
