Tragic news strike as former NHL defenseman sadly passes away at the young age of 51.
Former Ottawa Senators defenceman, Dmitri Filimonov, originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets but spent his entire NHL career with the Ottawa Senators, has passed away at 51-years old.
A recent report from Sport-express.ru does not list a cause of death for the former USSR national team player. It only says he "died suddenly."
"Filimonov died suddenly. The hockey player's funeral is scheduled for Monday."
Filimonov was a former second round pick (49th overall) in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. However, he remained in Russia until his rights were traded to the Ottawa senators.
During the 1993-94 season, the defensman only managed to score 1 goals and 4 assists.
"Former Sens defenseman Dmitri Filimonov has reportedly passed away at age 52. Filimonov played 30 games for the team in '93-94."
On behalf of everyone at NY Rangers Insider, our deepest condolences go out to Filimonov's family and friends during this difficult time.
