Between the two teams, New York was working on sending Trouba to Detroit, sending him home, while helping the Wings to reinforce their defense.
Trouba would likely waive his NTC to return home to Michigan, as Trouba also played for the Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA during 2012-2013.
But, there's nothing set in stone as it sounds like they're hammering out the details.
The NHL Draft concluded long ago as this was reported, but of course Trouba won't be a free agent until July 1st and hasn't submitted his 15-team NTC.
But the complexities of the deal including salary have to be part of the reason for the delay in the trade, not to mention the fact that Trouba's camp is involved in the process all along the way.
Trouba would help shore up the Red Wings' right-side defense, as an 11-year veteran with a physical style of play.
Trouba finished the year with the Rangers earning the Mark Messier Leadership Award while playing 69 games for the Original Six team.
He currently earns $8 Million AAV for the next two contract years, but for the deal to happen, Chris Drury might have to eat a significant amount of cap space, according to New York Post's Larry Brook's: $2.5 Million to make it work.
