Rangers Captain Jacoba Trouba Will be a Trade Piece This Offseason
The New York Rangers will look to upgrade the blueline this offseason, as this iteration of the team, wasn't able to finish the job.
One of those odd-men out could end up being Captain Jacob Trouba who according to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman will likely be moved this off-season.
Friedman on TJMS: "Trouba, I think he keeps his no-move but his full no-trade becomes a partial on July 1 and I've heard the Rangers have asked for his list"
The Rangers want to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals and the Captain who has been with the team for the past five seasons, was unable to stop the Panthers in their tracks.
This will likely be a difficult move, as Trouba has a no-trade clause, but when July 1st rolls around, Chris Drury could ask for his list.
"I've heard #NYR are trying to move a defenseman ... a lot of talk that Jacob Trouba could be the odd man out there." Johnston said."
Tough times for the Captain, whose been a subject of media and NHL fan derision in the last few years.
NHL Insider Chris Johnston added to the ongoing discussions regarding the Rangers souring relationship with Trouba, as he regressed in play and by the end of the season, was a $8 Million AAV, 3rd-pairing defenseman. Which is not a price any GM would want to pay for Trouba at this point in his career.
"CJ notes that it's "not because he's disliked or anything," but notes that he's simply too expensive to be a third-pairing defenseman and his NMC becomes a 15-team NTC on July 1st. Says "that's something to keep an eye on." #NYR"
Once his NMC turns into an NTC, GM Chris Drury should find a path to trade Trouba, and even Frank Seravalli of DailyFaceOff put him on the Trade Targets board on Wednesday this week.
According to Seravalli, he wonders if Trouba could end up playing in his home state of Michigan, with the Detroit Red Wings.
It seems likely a deal could happen soon, as they need the cap space to sign Igor Shesterkin and to secure other RFA's waiting for a contract.
"The Rangers are exploring all of their options this summer as GM Chris Drury remains as aggressive as ever trying to get New York over the hump. One of those options is potentially moving his captain. Trouba also just happens to be dropping down from a full no-movement' clause to a 15-team no-trade' list starting on Monday. Trouba has positive trade equity, despite the cap hit, because the term is so short with two years remaining. Teams crave his intensity, leadership and physicality. Are the Detroit Red Wings, looking to upgrade their blueline, a viable option for the Michigan native?" Seravalli said.
The 30-year-old defenseman appeared in 69 games for the Rangers this season, scoring 22 points( 3 G, 19 A) and earning 73 PIMS with a plus/minus of -4.
All the while scoring 7 points in 16 Stanley Cup playoff games.
The New York Rangers should be a busy team this off-season, as they look to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals under the direction of GM Chris Drury and Coach Peter Laviolette.
