Finding a career, post-retirement for many in the sports world can be difficult and it was the same for goalie Mike Richter. A Stanley Cup champion, who has suffered concussions and a fractured skull had to call his career early after a doctor's visit at age 36.
He wasn't cleared to play hockey the season after:
«I couldn't mouth the words: Hey, it's over,'» Richter told Peter Baugh of The Athletic.
Richter would retire holding the All-Time Wins record in New York, only to be surpassed by Henrik Lundqvist later.
His jersey would be retired and raised to the rafters in 2004, at Madison Square Garden. It was a great reminder of whom he was and what he had to walk away from.
«It is like a death,» Richter said. «That's who you were, and you are no longer that.»
He soon explored another door that opened, as in 2004 he applied to colleges with the intent of finishing a degree he started in the 80s. He graduated from Yale with a major in ethics, politics, and economics, minoring in Environmental Policy.
«This is the air we breathe, this is the water we drink, this is the limited resources we either have or don't have,» Richter said. «We better figure it out and figure it out right, fast. Because everybody's got a stake.»
He has since become President of Brightcore Energy, a clean energy company with the goal to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
He's been with the company since 2016, a year after its founding, and has since grown to a company of 120 employees.
He focuses on sales and business development, along with employee motivation. Of course, it's taken time and effort to get to where he is now, but this seems the perfect job to follow up a legendary career as a netminder.
«It's fascinating to go from one world to another,» Richter said. «I feel like there's a larger, meaningful need that you're addressing. If you can make the world a little bit better, great.»
