With unrestricted free agency set to begin on July 1st, it appears that the New York Rangers and the agent of Patrick Kane have been working on a new deal which will see the three-time Stanley Cup champion returned to New York City.
General manager Chris Drury has managed to clear $3.6 million in cap space after putting Rangers forward Barclay Goodrow on waivers who was then picked up by the San Jose Sharks with the full salary intact. This has given the Rangers now $12.8 million in cap space which gives them an opportunity to land Kane.
It became clear that Kane is looking for another opportunity to win the Stanley Cup and with the Rangers in the Eastern Conference final this year, adding a player of his calibre will give them another weapon.
After undergoing invasive hip resurfacing surgery last summer, Kane was fantastic playing 50 games with the Red Wings and scoring 22 goals with 47 points and was a factor in the Red Wings near miss of the playoffs.
Last season he signed a contract worth $2.7 million. It's likely he will receive a raise but due to his age and the concern of his hip even though it was repaired, he may not be much more than 4 million per year. This would give the Rangers a chance to sign him plus an additional offensive upgrade which will help the Rangers next season.
