Matt Rempe's boarding of Dallas Stars defenseman, Miro Heiskanen has been a cause of debate. Is suspending the enforcer for eight games this season a legitimate response by the Department of Player Safety?

This isn't Rempe's only punishment, as he's been suspended before as he was given four games for elbowing the Devils' Jonas Siegenthaler in the head last March.

The fallout from his recent misconduct has given NHL Insiders a lease to offer opinions on the kind of discipline Rempe deserved.

NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman believes that Rempe's suspension was justified. He needs to learn his lessons according to the 32 Thoughts Podcast host.

«He deserved the suspension for it and all I can say is I hope he learns his lessons... He's just gotta learn his lessons, and if he doesn't, then, you know, he's gonna keep getting suspended or eventually his NHL dreams will come to an end,» Friedman said.

Meanwhile, Larry Brooks of the New York Post believes that Rempe is being prosecuted wrongly.

«Selective prosecution. Rempe should appeal,» Brooks posted via X.

While the suspension was given after Rempe's meeting with the Department of Player Safety on zoom, Sunday the incident was classified as "elbowing/boarding".

Heiskanen didn't have possession of the puck, and Rempe wouldn't hesitate to hit the defenseman with brutality.

Keep in mind, this isn't the only time he's been guilty of committing a penalty on the ice.

The 22-year-old forward has been assessed four game misconducts as well as eight major penalties in 22 regular-season games for the Rangers.

Head Coach Peter Laviolette had his opinion on the matter too.

«I thought he led off a little bit at the end. He's just such a big guy,» head coach Peter Laviolette said. «We killed the five, and we're moving on.»

We have yet to see how the Rangers will deal with Rempe's latest transgressions. The team will miss his presence on the ice, as he's a forward who can create space and knock players off the puck with ease.

Yet that "play" was late, and led to a game misconduct.

For someone whose said he's dedicated the offseason to changing his playstyle, this looks like more of the same we've seen before.
