Major trade proposal surfaces between New York Rangers and Blue Jackets
As training camp gets closer by the day, a recent trade proposal has surfaced between the New York Rangers and the Columbus Blue Jackets in acquiring Patrik Laine.

The proposal shows the Columbus Blue Jackets retaining $4.4 million of Laine's contract which would allow the Rangers to fit him under there cap. The Rangers then would send beleaguered winger Kappo Kakko along with a first-round pick in 2025 to close the deal.
This proposal would give the Rangers an offensive weapon that would add to their arsenal especially when he's healthy. Prior to going to the NHL player assistance program, he had scored six goals with three assists for nine points in 18 games. He would also help the Rangers in solving one of their issues of lack of goal scoring especially five on five.
Going the other way, Kakko seems to be looking for a change of scenery even though he signed a one-year deal with the Rangers at $2.4 million. The Blue Jackets are a rebuilding franchise and would certainly have plenty of room for the 23-year-old forward. The former second overall pick would benefit from plenty of ice time with the Blue Jackets and would fit under their cap easily.
Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell has given Laine permission to speak to other teams.
«Well he's still a Blue Jacket today and as we speak, I don't have anything (newsworthy of) interest, but nothing that I had to make a decision on yet. Just some teams do their homework and trying to talk with Patrick and his agent and he thought about giving full permission to talk to teams. So, but as we are talking, I don't have anything that on the table that would even make any sense for the Blue Jackets to make that deal,» Waddell said.
It's clear both players need a change, and this trade would benefit both clubs. Should he be now it remains to be seen on whether Rangers general manager Chris Drury and Waddell could find a deal that would work.
