He states that rookie forward Brennan Othmann appears to be the lead candidate will attempt to secure a roster spot during this year's training camp. Othmann was selected by the Rangers in the 2021 entry draft, 16th pick overall, and he has shown the Rangers organization that he is one of their best players and in the AHL.
Last season, he played 67 games had scored 21 goals with 49 points. The 21-year-old left winger who stands at six feet 181 lbs has made it clear that he is going to do everything it takes to try to make the Rangers lineup as he feels he is ready to take the next step.
Rosen dropped another name who may not be as well known as Othmann in Brett Berard. During the 2020 entry draft, he was chosen in the fifth round and has been one of their best players. Last season he had 48 points along with 25 goals which helped Hartford in the standings.
If both players can show Rangers management and their coaching staff that they're ready for the NHL, this would be a huge boost for the Rangers as the team is seeking more scoring depth especially in their middle 6 and into their bottom 6. One issue the Rangers have faced is secondary scoring especially during the playoffs and they had to continuously lean on their top 6 for all goals.
This will also help them with their cap situation as the team continues to balance their cap space and prepare themselves for a major negotiation with goaltender Igor Shesterkin.
It will be an interesting training camp for head coach Peter Laviolette and his staff, and it's likely both players will have some NHL games in the early weeks of the NHL season. But the Rangers are a competitive team and there's only so many spots available.
