LeBrun suggested that the New York Rangers should trade starting goalie, Igor Shesterkin for Toronto Maple Leafs sniper, Mitch Marner, Which is undoubtedly a controversial suggestion.
There had been speculation this offseason that the Toronto Maple Leafs would send Mitch Marner packing. But GM Brad Treliving would instead opt to keep Marner in Toronto, of course, we'd have to consider the variable of Marner's NTC coming into play. This could be another reason why he wasn't moved.
But the core four remain intact in Toronto, and the Maple Leafs wouldn't find the pieces they need to win the cup, for another year of "running it back".
Marner would gain heat over his careless remarks, during the offseason and still desired to remain in the blue and white, a Maple Leaf. But could he be headed to New York City, Broadway soon?
NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun would posit the idea that the Toronto Maple Leafs would deal with Mitch Marner in order to secure a top goalie talent in the NHL. LeBrun thinks he could be a trade piece in order to make a deal for Rangers fan-favorite, Igor Shesterkin.
LeBrun would ask this question on a panel, with Jamie McLennan, Bryan Hayes and Jeff O'Neill. What could they do with Marner on July 1st?
It's an interesting thought to ponder, as they haven't had luck with their goaltending depth lately. They've gone through Ilya Samsonov, and Matt Murray, and those two didn't solve the Maple Leafs' woes. Now with Joe Woll, and Anthony Stolarz at the helm could they help the Leafs course correct?
If not, they may have to rely upon someone from outside the organization and find talent like Igor Shesterkin to take them all the way.
Marner is due a salary upwards of $12 Million and the Maple Leafs could use the cap space for other players.
Shesterkin will be in the last year of a deal with the Rangers and could make close to what Marner is, but not $12 million AAV.
This is an interesting trade because hypothetically, it solves both team's issues.
But I don't see GM Chris Drury following through on it, because it'd only leave Jonathan Quick in the net, and none of the AHL prospects are ready to be promoted, including Garand.
There'd have to be another goalie prospect attached, or the Leafs would have to eat cap space to even consider something like this for the Rangers.
This is another case of "what ifs" more than what could be when it comes to pundits speaking about possible trades.
