NHL insider reveals the New York Rangers plans once Alexis Lafreniere's contract ends
The New York Rangers will have an RFA to deal with at the end of next season.
That will be breakout forward, Alexis Lafreniere who had a career-year, next to Artemi Panarin, and Vinnie Troecheck in 2023-2024.
It's only a matter of when, as the Rangers however they have priorities to attend to beforehand, with Igor Shesterkin.
"I have no doubt Lafreniere will sign a new contract with the Rangers at some point," Dan Rosen of NHL.com wrote. "They won't lose him. He's a huge part of their present and future. But New York's cap structure for next season and several beyond will be determined by goalie Igor Shesterkin's next contract. Shesterkin also has one year left on his current contract. He needs to be the top priority, before Lafreniere and defenseman K'Andre Miller, who also has one year left on his contract, are taken care of." While Lafreniere will eventually be taken care of, Chris Drury has to make a deal with the face of the Rangers, Igor Shesterkin.
The Rangers and fans know that Lafreniere has progressed, which means he will fetch more value on his contract.
In 82 games with the Rangers last season he scored 57 points(28 G, 29 A) he's finally arrived, as a 1st round pick.
As the salary cap is sure to rise next season, the Rangers will have to address Shesterkin, K'Andre Miller, and Lafreniere.
None of these decisions will be easy to make when it comes to valuable players like the trio mentioned above.
