Rangers Forward Filip Chytil Gets Brutally Honest About Mental Health Struggles With Reocurring Injuries
It's been a rough two seasons for Filip Chytil who has suffered through multiple injuries. He was kept out of the majority of the 2023-2024 season due to a concussion and only returned to form this year until a collision with K'Andre Miller sidelined him.
Filip Chytil has been one of the Rangers' best players this season while he's been healthy.
At the beginning of the season, he, Will Cuylle, and Kaapo Kakko led the way on the ice for the team driving the majority of the offense.
However, he'd succumb to a collision which would sideline him back in November, while his struggles continued. He suffered an upper-body injury at the beginning of January.
He'd return to the ice against the Colorado Avalanche and is still working through the kinks, as he hasn't felt like himself lately.
As the struggles continue, wear and tear occurs not only to his body but his mind as well. The obstacles are very disheartening for Chytil.
«It's not just this year, it's very season,» Chytil said about his recurring injury problems. «Like I've said many times, it's frustrating because every time I start to feel great or every time I'm ready after the offseason, it's always a great start, and then something happens that slows me down. It's happened many times.
«It's frustrating because I don't show for a full season yet what I'm capable of and every time I have these stretches where I play great and then I get hurt, I have to go from zero again. Mentally now I've been through that many times, so I know it's not going to be easy. I need to work through that and find that game as soon as possible because I know what I can do and I know how much I can help this team.»
When healthy, his speed and size make him one of the Rangers dominant players on the ice. He's capable of making plays and using his size to create space on the ice and crash the net.
«Mentally I can handle it better,» Chytil said. «It's always harder to come back when you were producing and scoring goals. You know mentally it's going to be hard, but you gotta find that flow that you have all the time. It's very challenging for myself.»
He's worked on his mental health, as it's as important to him as his physical health.
«On one hand, it's frustrating. On one hand, it's very challenging,» Chytil told The Hockey News. «When I'm feeling good, I know how much I can help this team and I showed it this season many times.
«It's about staying strong in the head and finding that game as soon as possible and this is the only option. No one could do that for me. I have to go through that and work hard.»
Chytil will have to keep putting in the work to keep his mental health strong, along with his physical health, considering how many concussions he's suffered.
He's played 34 games this season and has scored 27 points( 10 G, 17 A ) averaging only 14:00 minutes TOI.
