4 potential landing spots emerge for New York Rangers defenseman as he searches for trade
The New York Rangers thought they could improve by trading Captain Jacob Trouba, and Kaapo Kakko. But at the moment they remain back of the pack in the competitive Metropolitan Division. Could trading Zac Jonesget them back in the hunt?
Defenseman Zac Jones had received permission from GM Chris Drury and the New York Rangers to seek a trade.
This was reported by NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, and while Jones remains out of the lineup there should be suitors for the young defenseman.
Jones has played 95 games during his NHL career has only scored 25 points (4 G, 21 A ) in that time frame.
The Rangers gave Zac Jones permission to talk to other teams. There's interest, and he's good enough to take advantage of a new opportunity. One caveat: since he's not a big guy, teams with a smallish blue line are an unlikelier destination.
Where could Zac Jones end up? Here are some potential suitors.
The Edmonton Oilers & Calgary Flames
Jones could bolster the Calgary Flames depth on the blueline, as a young team. They were initially counted out of the playoff race due to the lack of top-end talent aside from Nazeem Kadri, and Rasmus Andersson. But Jones could help the team solidify a run to the playoffs, as long as it doesn't cost the Flames their future.
While the Oilers could also use Zac Jones which could lead to an arms race in Alberta. It's an entertaining notion, if the price is right for Jones he could be helpful on the left side as they have moved on from Cody Ceci recently, the team could use Jones as a 7th defenseman in case of injury.
. Jones would likely play a seventh-defender role with them, but with how much Kris Knoblauch likes to move his lineup around, he might be in a better situation with the Oilers and have more opportunities.
Seattle Kraken & Ottawa Senators
With Kaapo Kakko working out quite well in Seattle, the Kraken could find a bargain in making a trade for Jones. While they may not crack a playoff spot this season, Jones could be a reclamation project that pays dividends next year.
The Ottawa Senators are another NHL team that could benefit from Jones adding significant depth to the lineup. The team under Travis Green is fighting to stay in a playoff spot. If the cost to trade for Jones is low, he could yet again end up on another competing team's roster as a 7th defenseman.
It's been rumored by The Hockey Writers that the Rangers could move Jones before March 7th. But there's been no traction on trade-talks for the defenseman.
