Roster Transaction: New York Ranger GM Chris Drury sends defenseman to the AHL
The New York Rangers have made a major transaction sending depth defenseman, Matthew Robertson back to the AHL.
Robertson is a 2nd round draft pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and was called up to the big club as an extra last night.
His recall was part of the chaos the Rangers have endured, as they traded Jacob Trouba yesterday.
While relying upon Victor Mancini who helped to fill the hole in the lineup, while Braden Schneider was promoted to 2 RD last night afterward.
Robertson was next in line on the Rangers' depth chart for a call-up in the defensive ranks, and will unfortunately not get a look in the NHL this week.
Of course, serving as a 7th defenseman means you're only needed in the case of an injury or maintenance day and Mancini held fast playing 14 shifts last night with a 10:58 TOI last night.
Robertson, 23, has scored eight points (1 g, 7 a) in 19 games with the Wolf Pack this season. In 209 career AHL games, all with the Wolf Pack, the native of Edmonton, AB, has recorded 63 points (11 g, 52 a).
Robertson was drafted in the 2nd round 49th Overall in the 2019 NHL Draft and has yet to crack the NHL lineup.
For a defenseman with good size, he displays outstanding skating ability (he is smooth and makes it look effortless when on the ice). He can be used in all game situations, since he is very responsible with the puck. Displays outstanding hockey sense and passing ability. He sees the ice very well.
Robertson's $775K one-year deal expires at the end of the 2024-2025 season. The pending RFA has spent the majority of his professional career in the AHL with the Hartford Wolfpack.
He's played 209 games in the AHL, scoring 63 points( 11 G, 52 A), and has been with the Wolfpack since 2021-2022.
