It appears that the Jacob Trouba trade rumors may not be going away so soon as Sportsnet reporter Luke Fox feels the defenseman may be on the move again.
Fox explains that it would not be out of the realm of possibility that Anaheim Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek may make the decision to flip Trouba at a March trade deadline deal that could see the defender heading back to a contending team.
"Could Ducks GM Pat Verbeek eat some of Trouba's salary and flip him to a contender? Perhaps send him back to the East, closer to his wife's hospital residency, for the final year-and-a-half of the defenceman's contract?" - Luke Fox of Sportsnet
The Ducks have plenty of draft capital and financial means to retain some salary to make the deal happen. The ducks are currently in a full rebuild mode of their team and are looking for ways to help speed up the process with draft picks and prospects.
Moving out a guy like Trouba with certainly augment many contenders defence core as he plays with an edge and physicality that many teams crave.
It would also be the ideal time to make a trade like this as his salary would be far less for the remainder of the year and would be much more attractive especially that he has only one year remaining after this season.
Other NHL reporters including Adam Proteau of The Hockey News also thanks that the league and its fan base should not get comfortable with the idea of Trouba remaining with the Anaheim Ducks for the long term.
He echoes what fox states saying that a March trade deadline deal with likely be the way he would be traded within the next few months.
"We believe Trouba shouldn't get all that comfortable in Anaheim, because another trade may be in Trouba's future - either by or before this season's March 7 trade deadline, or in the off-season." - Adam Proteau of The Hockey News
As for the Rangers, many feel that the team is preparing another deal as general manager Chris Drury continues to remodel his team prior to the trade deadline as he has not been satisfied with how the team is played and how it has looked in its configuration.
Having cleared nearly $8 million in cap space, the Rangers will be prepared to make another trade or two to add to their roster as they attempt to remain in a playoff position and potentially get back on track to being one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference.
