As the summer draws to a close and NHL training camps are set to open in mid-September, some hypothetical questions have been raised including who would be the next captain of the New York Rangers if the trade to Detroit it occurred with Jacob Trouba.

Earlier in the summer, it was reported that general manager Chris Drury had attempted to make a trade with the Red Wings for Jacob Trouba. That trade of course did not occur, but it begs the question who would be the next captain, and it appears that Vincent Trocheck would make an excellent captain for the Blueshirts.

Trocheck made his choice to where he wanted to play for many years to come which was the Rangers last summer. He signed a seven-year $39.375 million contract and begin to pay off in dividends for the Rangers as he had 25 goals and 77 points.

He became a bigger factor in the playoffs and helped the Rangers nearly reached the Stanley Cup Finals. He clearly has the respect of the dressing room, management and the coaching staff and never dropped his intensity during the playoffs.

With all these qualities and with the weight of the fans behind him, head coach Peter Laviolette would have likely given the captaincy to Trocheck if that trade had occurred. But he remains part of the leadership group and Trouba remains as a Ranger.

It's possible Trouba could be moved later in the year but it's likely not the case. It's always fun to speculate from time to time.
