Insider reveals Atlantic Division team emerges as frontrunners to acquire Rangers top defenseman
NHL insider has revealed that a few teams have emerged as potential contenders to acquire New York Rangers top defensemen ahead of the March 7th trade deadline.
It was reported that the Detroit Red Wings were interested in acquiring 26-year defenseman Ryan Lindgren who is currently on a $4.5 million deal and will become a free agent after this season.
As the Rangers continue to struggle to make a playoff spot, General Manager Chris Drury is looking to make more drastic changes and Ryan Lindgren has emerged as a prime trade candidate.
Lindgren's unique style of play of brining physicality and reliability on the penalty kill has made himself a potential fit for the Red Wings, who are pushing for a playoff spot under new head coach Todd McLellan.
Just this season Lindgren has 2 goals and 9 assists while averaging nearly 20 minutes of ice time throughout 41 games this season.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli gave his opinion on the potential trade, noting that Lindgren would provide a steady presence, the Red Wings may need to consider the impact of making such a drastic move.
«I wonder about Detroit. Is he that big of an upgrade, though? That's the question I'd have to ask,» Seravalli said.
Making it clear that Lindgren's cost-effective contract could be an advantage for a team seeking immediate help without a lengthy financial commitment.
However, it was also revealed that Detroit isn't the only team interested, as other contenders like the Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators, and Los Angeles Kings have all been linked to the Rangers defenseman.
The Rangers' decision to move Lindgren will more than likely depend on whether they can make the Playoffs this year, as they still remain out of a wild-card spot despite some recent success.
