It seems over the past few weeks since the season has come to an end that Islanders forward Matt Martin and right winger Cal Clutterbuck were roped into retirement talk as both players will be finishing their contracts with the Islanders this season. It didn't take long for both players to shut down that talk and state that they will be unrestricted free agents with hopes of remaining with the Islanders for next year.

«The retirement narrative wasn't one I started,» Martin said Friday morning at Islanders breakup day. «I certainly plan on playing hockey. My focus is to get healthy and start building myself back up and get ready for next season.»
Clutterbuck, 36 has been with the Islanders since 2013 it has been a productive member of the team and feels like he would like to remain with the Islanders for next season. He is on his last year of his deal which holds a value of $1.75 million AAV and it will depend on what general manager Lou Lamoriello has in store for changes for next year.
«I'd love to play and obviously I'd love to play here,» Clutterbuck said. «This has been home for a very long time. Put a lot into my time here and had great experiences. I will be an Islander for life.
«Whether I get a chance to play next year or not, that's out of my control. At the same time, I get some time to make some decisions. Just got to gather some information, look at the options and go from there.»
Martin, 34 has spent the majority of his years with the Islanders including a 2-year stint with the Maple Leafs while Lamoriello was general manager of that organization. With his aggressive style of play and toughness, he will garner some attention across the league as his contract also will be done at the end of the year which held a value of $1.5 million AAV.
That said, it remains to be seen on what the future holds for both of these players and whether Lamoriello will want to re sign them or cut them loose.
