This season for the Pittsburgh Penguins has been a disaster.

Many NHL pundits had questions on whether the team should begin their rebuild sooner rather than later or try to go after the Stanley Cup one more time with its current configuration.

Newly minted general manager Kyle Dubas chose to keep the band together well adding Erik Karlsson into the mix.

Yesterday, the Penguins had a 4-0 lead against the Colorado Avalanche.

The team felt confident and was cruising to a victory when it all came to a crashing halt with the avalanche scoring 5 unanswered goals and beating the Penguins 5-4 in overtime.

As it stands through 70 games, the Penguins are 30-30-10 for 70 points and are currently 7th in the metro division.

Kyle Dubas began the reshape of his roster by moving Jake Guentzel at the trade deadline to his rival the Carolina Hurricanes for several prospects and draft picks.

The Rangers and other teams in the Metro will certainly be keeping an eye on the Penguins on whether they begin a teardown or a retool of their team or try again next year.

Meanwhile, the Rangers are enjoying a two day respite and will be back on the ice at home against the flailing Philadelphia Flyers. Game time will be 7:00 PM eastern.
