They were eliminated in 6 Games by the Dallas Stars, and with not a lot of cap space to work with, they need to find good, affordable help.
With the absence of Gabriel Landeskog, whose timetable to return isn't certain, while Valeri Nichushkin is in the Players Assistance Program, their projected cap space according to CapFriendly is: $15,916,250 at the end of the regular season.
While both star players remain out, they need to find bargain options, so when Nichushkin, or Landeskog returns, they won't be pressed against the cap.
Hence, why they're targeting these two Rangers:
Roslovic was a trade deadline acquisition from the Columbus Blue Jackets, had a disappointing year in 2023-2024. His current cap hit of $4 Million won't likely be what he can expect for 2024-2025.
The former first-round NHL draft pick hasn't found his game in New York when they needed it the most. He could be a bargain 20-goal scorer for the Avs, should he find his game again with a fresh start.
He may have come in clutch during one game in the Conference Finals, but with an overtime goal, it's likely he won't be back in New York. Since Wennberg's arrival in New York, he's only had 7 points in 35 games with the Blueshirts, this may stunt his bargaining position for next season, but could be an affordable defensive center for the Avalanche.
