Ceci is a trade candidate for many reasons, while he is a fringe top-pairing defenseman, he's unpopular. He's played in three teams in the last five seasons, before becoming an Oilers mainstay in 2021.
Ceci, not particularly known for offense has been a consistent contributor, despite in 2021-2022 reaching his career high in points in the NHL, with 28.
Ceci's been paired with Philip Broberg, Darnell Nurse, and Brett Kulak while performing the best with Broberg with a xg of 54.5. He struggled with Kulak and Nurse, and on his own his Xg% was 48.2% a second worst amongst all Oiler's defense.
Despite that, he's garnered plenty of interest in trade.
If the Rangers decide to move on from Jacob Trouba, they could be in the market for Cody Ceci.
Ceci is a reliable 20 minutes a night player and has a nice and manageable cap hit which is a big plus.
Ceci could be brought into mentor Zac Jones while eating major minutes nightly and sheltering younger players.
While the next logical part of this discussion is value, what value could the Oilers expect in return?
If there are no suitors, Ceci, they will have to pay to offload his contract and Ceci forces their hand, that's a likely scenario for the defenseman.
However, if they garner multiple teams interested in Ceci's services, the Oilers could expect a 2nd or 3rd-round draft pick in return.
It all depends on how Jeff Jacksons figures out a fit for Ceci, as he has been a regular in the Oilers lineup despite all his struggles in the playoffs.
He still has provided plenty of value during his time in Edmonton.
