Patrick Kane scored the winner, but the team was already made aware that the Washington Capitals had one their game earlier on which eliminated the Red Wings from the playoff race.
The Red Wings were on a tear for the last two weeks as there was a phenomenal playoff race that formed in the Eastern Conference around the same time.
Several teams including the Red Wings, Penguins, Islanders, Capitals, and Flyers were all jostling for spots.
In the final standings, both the Red Wings and the capitals shared 91 points but the capitals had the better tiebreaker scenario which they had more regulation wins than the Red Wings.
The sheer disappointment and downright sad moment for these players was all over the ice as they had worked hard to try to make it into the dance.
General manager Steve Yzerman has done a great job in turning this franchise back into a respectable 1 and clearly has a high ceiling towards making the playoffs and potentially being a Stanley Cup contender one day.
But for now, Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde and his team will sift through their season and prepare for the next one as their offseason begins.
