During the preseason it was reported that Igor Shesterkin rejected an eight-year, $88 million contract with the New York Rangers.
An absolute record breaking deal, one that would have made him the highest paid goalie in NHL history.
As Shesterkin entered the season without an extension, there has been a lot of pressure of pressure on the organization and Igor Shesterkin himself.
With the 28-year old superstar taking the risk and betting on himself, it seemed to have been the right decision as he was playing at an elite level early this season.
Many encouraged the Rangers to just give into Shesterkin contract demands and pay him what he wants. Thankfully they didn't do that.
In no means is Shesterkin performing poorly, but the amount of pressure of the upcoming contract has decreased his performance, with everyone closely monitoring his game there is little room for mistakes.
While on the other hand, Jonathan Quick has been outstanding, as the 38-year old is coming off back-to-back shutouts he's looking to get more starts.
While Quick isn't in any position to steal Shesterkin's spot, his recent performance have been helping to relieve some pressure for Shesty but also adds more stress as he must prove that he his worth more than the $88 million he turned down.
However, only time will tell when the Rangers and Shesterkin will finalize a deal, it may be mid-season, or even closer to when the season is over.
The only that that is certain, the New York Rangers won't just give up Igor Shesterkin, as he is the future of the organization.
