Elliotte Friedman reveales the New York Rangers declined top defenseman in Jacob Trouba trade
It has recently been reported that the New York Rangers declined an offer to acquire a bigger addition when trading Jacob Trouba.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has confirmed the New York Rangers could have acquired defenseman Cam Fowler from the Anaheim Ducks but they decide to decline.
On Friday afternoon, the Rangers traded their captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman Urho Vaakanainen and a 2025 fourth-round pick.
It has been reported that the Ducks wanted to give up Cam Fowler in this deal for Jacob Trouba as he was open to the idea of joining the Rangers.
According to Elliotte Friedman, Rangers GM Chris Drury was ultimately not interested in that offer as he was looking to clear up some cap space for more flexibility in the future.
«I heard that Anaheim wanted Fowler in this deal. I have no doubt Fowler wanted to be in this deal,» Friedman said. "It's been out there: he wants to be traded, he wants to play for a contender. I never heard Vatrano's name in it, but I did hear Fowler's. At the end of the day, they couldn't get it done. I think one of the reasons is New York wanted the flexibility for both this year and next.»
The 33-year old defenseman carries a $6.5 million cap hit with his contract set to end after the 2025-26 season, so acquiring a player who has recorded three assists and three points in 14 games didn't make much sense to Drury.
At the end of the day, Drury was able to clear up Trouba's $8 million cap hit without receiving much money in return, helping the organization finalize a eight-year, $92 million contract extension with Igor Shesterkin.
