Howden was acquired from the New York Rangers in 2021 for a 2022 fourth-round draft pick, and Nick DeSimone.
It's been a long-road to earning a contract of this term, for Howden, as his first contract with the Vegas Golden Knights was originally, a 1-year deal totalling $1.5 Million AAV.
Now NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has announced that the Vegas Golden Knights have re-upped Howden at a term of 5 years, for $2.5 Million AAV.
This is Howden's fourth season in the NHL with the Vegas Golden Knights, and under Bruce Cassidy, he's done nothing but thrive.
During the 2023 season, he'd earn his first Stanley Cup with the Vegas Golden Knights, a feat he wouldn't ever achieve in New York.
His first season in Vegas saw him put up 20 points in 47 games with the Knights. But this season his compete level has reached another level:
He's certainly working on outdoing himself this year in Vegas, as he's found himself as a staple on the Golden Knights third line, flanking William Karlsson, and Pavel Dorofeyev.
In the meantime, it looks like it could be another case of the New York Rangers letting go of a prospect who couldn't find his way into the system.
The Rangers are deep, and Howden could've been a key piece in the organization if he'd been given a leash like Alexis Lafreniere had.
Now, he's a Stanley Cup champion and has found a home with Bruce Cassidy and the Vegas Golden Knights.
Is this another case of coulda, woulda, shoulda? Would you have traded Brett Howden too?
