Igor Shesterkin is looking to secure a massive chunk of the Rangers salary cap
Russia Goalie and New York Rangers sensation, Igor Shesterkin has established himself as a elite player in the NHL.
He has positioned himself to be the saving grace, when he team fails and delivers when his comrades, such as
Artemi Panarin and
Chris Kreider don't.
He maintained an elite save percentage in the playoffs, against all odds, in 16 games, with a record of 10-6, with a 2.34 GAA, and a .926 save percentage in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Which lends to the argument that the New York Rangers should pay Shesterkin what he's worth.
As he is looking for 14% of the Rangers $92 M salary cap, which would equal to $12.9 M AAV.
Which would be far above a goalie like
Carey Price's salary percentage in the past which was 10% of the Canadiens cap at one point.
But keep in mind that Price is just 24-years-old and will now be making more money per season than long-time proven goalies like Niklas Backstrom ($6 million) and Miikka Kiprusoff ($5.8 million). Next year's $6.5 million salary will also constitute nearly 10% of the team's salary cap space.
#Rangers 🇺🇸 superstar goaltender Igor Shesterkin (@shesterkinigor) 🇷🇺 is looking for 14% of the expected $92M salary cap which would equate to $12.9M AAV.
Shesterkin is entering the final year of his deal and will become a UFA in the summer of 2025 if he is without a deal.
He is eligible to be signed to an extension by New York tomorrow at 12 PM EST.
If the Rangers cannot find the cap to sign with the Rangers, he could end up walking in free agency to the next contender who will easily swoop in and sign him off the market.
"We're not even in this position without him," captain
Jacob Trouba said. "I don't think anybody in this room thinks otherwise."
Without Shesterkin the Rangers are dead in the water against the best teams in the NHL.
GM Chris Drury should figure out what his move is to secure Shesterkin's services long-term.
