Major changes in trade talks takes an unexpected turn for several Rangers veterans
Multiple changes emerge in trade talks regarding several New York Rangers veteran that won't benefit the organization.
The Rangers have reportedly made two veteran players, Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider available for trade but it seems to have backfired on the Rangers.
The Rangers have recently managed to end their five-game losing streak as they beat the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday afternoon which has helped their case.
However, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman this move surprised many throughout the league, especially as Kreiders's name emerged in trade talks for the first time in 13-seasons.
«And you know, people have heard Trouba's name before. They hadn't heard Kreider's name before. And I think in the aftermath of that, what teams were trying to figure out was, what are the Rangers really willing to do?»
Along with that both players hold partial no-trade clauses, limiting potential destinations and making it harder for teams to reach out.
Trouba and Kreider's contracts both also pose challenges when it comes to possible trades.
Trouba carries an $8 million cap hit through 2025-26 along with a 15-team no-trade clause. As Chris Kreider carries a $6.5 million AAV that runs through 2026-27, with a 15-team no-trade clause as well.
The Rangers however, have apparently kept a tight grip on negotiations, restricting rival teams from directly speaking to both of the players.
"I think the interesting thing here is that the Rangers did not give anyone permission to speak to Trouba or Kreider. They want to keep control of the process, and that's critical because earlier this week, the NHL sent out a memo. Now you'll remember, at the GM meetings, they warned teams about tampering.»
Causing concern on how badly the Rangers organization really wants to trade both players or if they're just worried about the message sent from the NHL regarding terms of tampering.
