The New York Rangers have a tough decision to make with defenseman Will Borgen. They received him in the trade for Kaapo Kakko which sent the forward to Seattle, could Borgen be traded or extended?

Borgen has been one of the Rangers hardest working defensemen as he's played 11 games for the team this season.

Averaging a TOI of 18:37, and has helped solve some of the team's issues on the blue line.

Recently, the Rangers have started to turn things around with the playoffs not being totally out of the picture for this team, so keeping Borgen for a playoff push would be wise of Drury.

Could he earn himself an extension from GM Chris Drury? Borgen is set to become a UFA at the end of the 2024-2025 season.

«The Rangers have gotten some strong games out of Will Borgen, another pending UFA who came from the Kraken in the Kakko trade, and Borgen would be a decent option to extend beyond this season if he'd be willing to take third-pair minutes in 2025-26,» Arthur Staple of The Athletic wrote. «That too seems unlikely, so Borgen is another possible trade piece before the March 7 deadline.»

Borgen is a gritty defenseman who doesn't have a massive price tag of $2.7 Million, and has been a defensive-defenseman in the league.

As a Trouba replacement he's done well on the right side, and defensemen on the right side are generally one of the more coveted positions in the league.

So, while he could earn himself more this offseason, will the Rangers decide to sign or trade him?

The gritty blueliner seems to be playing himself into a pay raise and he certainly would be a good option for the Rangers to have moving forward as possibly a third-pairing defenseman.

If the Rangers are able to get more value out him either way through trade or a possible playoff spot, the trade could be worth it in the long-run.

New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Will Borgen, a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, and a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for Kaapo Kakko.
