New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury and his management team face a critical decision on the trajectory of their team as they need to decide on whether to be buyers or sellers with the March trade deadline just around the corner.
This discussion was not expected this season after the team had put together the best regular season in Rangers history with 55 wins last year. After a dreadful December which knocked the Rangers out of a playoff spot, the team has somewhat rebounded but remains in limbo.
Rangers need to decide whether to buy or sell
Several hockey pundits including Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli Have indicated the Rangers appear to be trending towards the seller model.
«Right now, they're trending to be sellers,» NHL insider Frank Seravalli said. «But, I still don't believe that Chris Drury is going to sit back and do nothing.
«I think they're going to be buyers for the long haul, but maybe not fixing this season, if that makes any sense.» - Daily Faceoff Frank Seravalli
Next few weeks will be crucial for Rangers season
If Drury feels they will sell off to retool the team, It's likely he will trade some of his unrestricted free agents which include Reilly Smith, Ryan Lindgren, Will Borgen, Jimmy Vesey and Jonathan Quick. This will help the Rangers recoup some assets especially draft picks to help restock the cupboard.
There's also the possibility that the Rangers could reheat and find themselves back in a playoff spot which could mean they'd be buyers and sellers as the team would consider adding to their roster to try to make a run for a playoff spot.
If the Rangers truly get their game back on track and find themselves in a playoff position in a few weeks, that selling mindset may change from Drury.- Remy Mastey The Hockey News
The next month will be a critical time for the organization as it's clear the team is far from being a Stanley Cup contender but certainly a potential playoff contender with the team being as good as it was last season.
The Rangers will face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Madison Square Garden today at 7:00 PM on January 18th.
