Kristen Shilton of ESPN pointed out the Rangers weaknesses that led them to being eliminated, the main focus being their softer style of play.
A few solutions to fix this problem would be for the Rangers management to prioritize acquiring players who show toughness and grit along with offensive skills.
Some players they should consider targeting:
1. Max Domi: The Toronto Maple Leafs center is well known for his grit and offensive instincts. Domi could provide the Rangers with secondary scoring, and can easily get under his opponents skin. As a pending free agent he could definitely be a valuable addition
2. Tyler Bertuzzi's: Maple Leafs winger who isn't afraid of getting himself in uncomfortable situations, and sitting in front of the net, Bertuzzi also being a UFA he has proven he can be a playoff performer.
3. Trade Market: While the two Maple Leafs forwards are great options, The New York Rangers could also explore the trade market for players who show a newer style of grit, such as younger, cost-controlled players with two-way potential.
The method of adding more physicality and two-way skilled players has been proven to work as the Panthers and the Golden Knights have done the same in previous years. With doing so the Rangers could become a more competitive team during the playoffs.
