Kaako was slated to be a restricted free agent who did not hold arbitration rights. Several pundits and many fans have felt that the Rangers may move on from Kakko as he has not worked up to his potential.
The number given to him in his contract was the same number as his qualifying offer which leads to believe that his agent explained to him that this is a good deal for both parties and the Rangers managed to retain him for another year.
The 23-year-old had a disappointing playoff as he played fifteen games, scoring one goal and one assist for two points it was a - 4. During the season, he played 61 games, scoring 13 goals with six assists for 19 points and is a + 6 with 24 Penalty minutes.
Some fans will have trouble with this contract as he's only played an average ice time of 13 minutes and 16 seconds and to give $2.4 million to a player who had only 19 points through 61 games certainly may raise some eyebrows.
But the decision was made, and they now hold him for another season. Now it's up to general manager Chris Drury and head coach Peter laviolette to figure out what he needs to be successful along with Kaako raising his game to the next level.
