Rangers Jacob Trouba expressed surprising comments for new season
While speaking to the athletic, Rangers captain Jacob Trouba has expressed some surprising comments regarding the rumors and the potential trade of his services this summer.
He spoke about all the noise surrounding his potential departure from the team and it appears that he is fine with all that's gone on and is in good standing with the Rangers and general manager Chris Drury.
«It was fine,» Trouba told The Athletic in a Q&A on Thursday. «It's part of the business. I knew that part of my contract turned this year (to a no-trade list), and I submitted a list. That's what I did. All the other noise was pretty much noise.
«I'm happy to be here. I'm excited to go into the season. Great opportunity ahead of us.»
It was reported earlier this summer that the Rangers had requested for his 15 no team trade list as Drury was seeking out ways to improve his cap space as the team faced a cap crunch.
He alleviated some of that crunch by moving Barclay Goodrow to waivers who was then picked up by the San Jose Sharks. That move freed up $3.6 million in cap space.
There were other rumors early in the summer that the Detroit Red Wings and the Rangers were either close or had a deal in place to sending Trouba along with his money to The Motor City.
That, however, did not happen and Trouba remains with the Rangers.
With all these rumors, Trouba remains open and honest with the media stating that he is happy to be with the Rangers.
«Yeah, they were great the whole time,» Trouba explained. «Even going back years prior, me and Dru' have always had a good relationship. We can speak to each other when we want to. He has a lot of trust in me, I think, and I'm grateful for that. We're excited to get started this year.»
It certainly seems likely that the Rangers captain will remain with the team for the foreseeable future unless a change of heart happens between both parties.
Trouba has an $8 million hit on his cap space for the next two years and if the Rangers cannot find a buyer for this kind of money it's likely he will fulfill the remainder of his deal to which he will become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
