The Toronto Maple Leafs signed veteran defenseman Chris Tanev this free agency to a six-year, $27 million deal.
However, this contract may work against the Maple Leafs.
Toronto's rumored plan was to put Tanev on the LTIR on the waning years of his term when it bo longer benefited them to have his $4.5 million AAV against the cap.
Well, Jim Parsons of The Hockey News and The Hockey Writers hinted that this plan will not work.
If the NHL wanted to fix this LTIR loophole system, they could just do it. And it'll put the Leafs in a spot to pay Tanev the full six years instead of getting the easy way out.
From Duhatschek:
If the league genuinely wanted to do that [change the rules], they would find ways of plugging the loopholes in the system. This, by the way, is inherently just like the NHL. As soon as a rule is in place, teams try to find creative ways of circumventing it. Ever since the cap system was introduced, teams have found complicated, but legal ways to get around the theoretical cap ceiling.
